Feels like the first time

Everyone says bookshelves are the easiest woodworking project a newbie can do. And most people say tiling is something that simpletons can accomplish.

This blog will test those beliefs to the fullest.

Here is my family room.

When redone, imagine the brick wall gone - or at least covered up. In its place, heavy-shelved white bookshelves on the right side, a matching entertainment center on the left, tile around the firebox, and a new screen to replace the aging brass one.

Currently, my plan is:
1 - attach firring strips to the brick.
2 - mount drywall to where the bookshelves will be, and a heat resistant board (forget what it's called now) around the fireplace itself.
3 - build bookcases (still looking for right plan)
4 - build mantle - solid, heavy looking slab to extend the width of the wall
5 - add built in lights under the mantle over the fireplace
6 - tile over fireplace

Missing anything?
